An Obituary

 

Our beloved Professor Batakrushna Mohanty passed away in his Cuttack residence on 18th June 2013. He was a fantastic teacher, friend and guide to students, colleagues and near ones. He earned heaps of praise from the students he taught.
Professor (Major) Batakrushna Mohanty was born on 1st Jan,1925 at Mallikapur via Ahiyas (Jajpur) in the district of undivided Cuttack. He passed M.Com from Calcutta University in 1948 and was appointed as a lecturer in Commerce, G.M.College the next year.
Prof. Mohanty had daring leadership quality irrespective of the field he was put to Prof. Mohanty was a brilliant teacher in accountancy and commercial geography. As a social reformer, he has motivated many under privileged people as a Rotarian in Sambalpur and Baragarh.
He served as a whole time NCC officer on deputation to Ministry of Defence from 1963 to 1968. He joined as Principal of Baragarh College in 1969 and later became the Deputy registrar of Sambalpur University in 1972. From 1978 to 1982, he served thrice as President of Board of secondary education, Orissa in different years.
Prof.Mohanty also served as Principal of Ravenshaw College in 1981.In 1983, he became the Chairman, Council of Higher Secondary Education, Orissa. To top it all, Prof.Mohanty became the Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University in 1984 and then the Vice Chancellor of Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri in 1985. During 1989-1998, he acted as the Chairman , local managing committee of D.A.V Schools in Cuttack city.
Prof.Mohanty has also occupied the President position of Orissa Commerce Association 1978 & 1980 and India Commerce Association (1983).
Prof. Batakrushna Mohanty spoke with a lot of passion and was a humble person with strong moral values. He has guided many of us to where we stand today. The Commerce student community owes a lot to him and he will be remembered forever for his immense contribution to education in Orissa.
